When creating an e-portfolio, what do you feel are the essential components that captured what you're learned?  What previous work(s) do you think would highlight yourself and your top learning achievements at APUS? If you were to review an e-portfolio as an employer, what learning outcomes would be most important?

Student Response

micheal

A key aspect of an e-portfolio is connecting learning with professional ambitions. My studies in transportation and logistics management have consistently overlapped with my professional interest in national security, especially from a military perspective. Therefore, the essential components in my e-portfolio are those elements that offer insight into the national security aspects of transportation and logistics management. The products that I will include in my e-portfolio demonstrate learning that is certainly relevant for military application, but may be beneficial as well in civilian positions related to national or private security in the field transportation and logistics.

The works I have included examine global transportation and logistics development projects from the perspective of great power competition, maritime transportation security threats connected with widespread international conflict, and more specifically, potential port improvement opportunities that may assist the Brazilian Port of Santos in gaining market shares as international tensions disrupt traditional trade patterns. Viewing global transportation and logistics concepts through the lens of great power competition highlights my natural interests as well as the unique perspective that I have achieved through integration of these interests into my studies at AMU.

If I were an employer examining the e-portfolio of a potential employee, I would look for two main elements. First, I would want to see a solid understanding of broad concepts related to the business processes carried out by my firm. Specified skillsets, while certainly important, are often easier to provide through focused training and on-the-job experience. A strong contextual understanding, on the other hand, is what I would expect from a graduate, and should provide a foundation for advancement into higher-level management positions. Second, and equally important, I would look for alignment between the individual’s personal interests and the work of the firm. This would indicate a level of commitment that goes beyond the paycheck and may give the individual, as well as the firm, a unique edge over competition.

What types of information might an e-portfolio provide that may not be as evident following an interview?

Joshua

While creating an e-portfolio the essential components are showing that you have several skills.  The critical skills you can show are your ability to critically think, synthesize information, and have a certain level of writing ability.  This work shows that you are a capable communicator and will be able to lay out your thoughts or work in a clear explainable manner. No one likes to work with those who are poor communicators or those who do not know how to write thoughtfully to complete a complex project.  I a actually began to create my e-porfolio about 1 ½ years ago on LinkedIN there was a lot of trials and errors as I stumbled through posting articles. What I learned and intended to do was expand my profile reach so I could connect with others. I also wanted more of my papers to be public knowledge to add to the information on the internet. My best achievement was being able to write a few articles for small websites on my work experiences.

Having been an hiring manager I did not consider looking for e-porfolios. It was too much work to do that when I could go to hiring sites such as Monster.com, LinkedIN, and clearancejobs.com. Often times I was only looking at their education to check mandatory boxes and would glance the resume for a few key ideas. But, it was often cold call conversations or scheduled interviews that I learned the most about the candidate and how they would fit into the organization if selected. There were several occasions where amazing candidates on paper where lack luster in performance and those who were riding the line and questionable did outstanding work. So, I learned that e-porfolios were not much help to me as a hiring manger.

TOPIC: JAILHOUSE INFORMANTS

The use of jailhouse informants is a controversial issue and topic. In this module, you will identify a controversial issue that creates a negative public perception of the criminal justice field. The use of these informants is one such issue, and there are many arguments to be made for and against their use. This is a great area for you to sharpen your analysis of subsequent issues. Jailhouse informants have existed since plea bargains have been accepted. Jailhouse informants provide information to the government in criminal proceedings in exchange for reduced sentences or release from jail. This is powerful motivation for individuals in jail to testify at criminal proceeding in exchange for a reduced sentence or release. This powerful motivation can lead an individuals to testify against someone when they normally would not, or even influence an informant to concoct information to receive a reduced sentence. Jailhouse informants are unlike street informants in that jailhouse informants testify to information that they have heard while both the declarant and the informant are in custody. There are many controversial issues associated with this, especially the issue dealing with or relating to the motivation of the informant, and whether the informant may be prone to lie to gain release or favors from the government in his or her prosecution.

Submits choice of case study.

 September 04, 2022     No comments

 Submits choice of case study.

 Explains selection by providing detailed paragraph on choice of case study.

TOPIC SELECTED: Corrections Subdivision (aka Detention)

The primary function of a corrections officer is to protect the community by supervising offenders and reporting noncompliance to the sentencing or releasing authority. In addition to the organizational mission statement, the corrections subdivision has its own mission. The mission of the Department of Detention is to serve diligently and reliably collaborate with other entities within the criminal justice community. The Department of Detention will ensure protection of the surrounding community by establishing safe, secure, and human supervision and confinement of inmates. This subdivision has recently been faced with some challenges, including overpopulation of inmates, budget constraints, and high attrition rates. The factors have led to outdated officer equipment, low employee retention rates, and inexperienced management. There is a high level of camaraderie between employees, and interdepartmental communication is exceptional. There is also rapid personnel growth due to many advancement opportunities and efficient employee training and education. The benefits package is one of the better offerings in the state. •

In this week's reading, "Evolution of Data Storage Models",

 September 02, 2022     No comments

In this week's reading, "Evolution of Data Storage Models", various storage models were discussed from flat files to object-oriented databases.  While the document covers much of the topic, it is by no means complete.  The needs of organizations, and their underlying technologies, continue to change.  Because of these changes, database models will continue to evolve.  Information Systems professionals who wish to remain relevant will need to stay abreast of these new database models.  It is, therefore, important for Information Systems professionals to develop research skills so they can stay current on technologies as they change.  This first assignment is an opportunity to build, or reinforce, those research skills.

Assume that your boss has just caught the last minute of an NPR report on the newest database trend: NoSQL databases.  Your boss is intrigued and wants you to prepare a one page executive summary on the topic for him.  Specifically, the summary needs to explain what a NoSQL database is (including its major features) and how it differs from a relational database.

The summary should include three to five references with proper citations - use APA format.  For the body of the document, use single spacing, one inch margins, and a 12-point font.

Points will be awarded as follows: Up to 20 points for complete/correct information; up to 10 points for proper references and citations; up to 10 points for quality writing and correct grammar.

You are expected to submit a 3-5-page paper

 September 02, 2022     No comments

You are expected to submit a 3-5-page paper (not including the title page, abstract, and reference

page) in current APA format addressing the four separate content areas. It is strongly

recommended that you use headings and subheadings for this paper. You must include citations

from:

1. all the required reading and presentations from the assigned module/week

2. all relevant sources from Module 1: Week 1 and Module 2: Week 2 (you MUST use the

"Biblical Principles of Government" article), and

3–5 outside sources.

This week, we focus on more specifics on these points.  You will have  the opportunity to read in greater detail those Biblical principles that  are relevant to an understanding of government and public policy, and  you will also have be introduced to the “May-Can-Should” policy analysis  process.  This process teaches you to first look at the moral/Biblical  foundation for a policy issue before tacking the practical logistics of  how to address the issue.  Too often, policy makers jump past the “May”  portion to focus on the “Can” and “Should” portions.

As a reference point for the Biblical worldview, keep this verse in  mind, "Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For  there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been  instituted by God. Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists  what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. For  rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no  fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will  receive his approval, for he is God's servant for your good. But if you  do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is  the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God's wrath on the  wrongdoer. Therefore one must be in subjection, not only to avoid God's  wrath but also for the sake of conscience. ..." Romans 13:1-7

 September 02, 2022     No comments

Content: In Genesis 1-2, The Hebrew Scriptures describe in successive ways the creation of the world and the Divine purpose of mankind. Utilizing the exegetical skills of narrative analysis, first, identify the main tenets of the Creation mandate given by God to mankind as they might relate to business. Second, as the Creation mandate anticipates mankind’s development and adoption of technology, identify the role of innovation and creativity vis-á-vis technology in the Creation mandate. Finally, using what you have identified above, describe the purpose and call to business as seen in the Creation mandate of Genesis 1-2.  also explore how an understanding of innovation and creativity as implied in the Creation mandate could play a role in the construction, adaptation, and use of technology in business for the 21st Century.

In weeks 2-7 of this course, we will examine one current issue each week.

 September 02, 2022     No comments

In weeks 2-7 of this course, we will examine one current issue each week. The first week involves brainstorming what those topics will be.  And while brainstorming is, theoretically, supposed to be free form, the nature of the course requires that there be some constraints:

The topics you propose should be current issues. In other words, they should not be recurring issues or ones that could have just as easily been discussed ten years ago.  For example, "conflict in the workplace" would not be an appropriate topic because there has been conflicted in the workplace for eons.  But something like "leading a Christian university in an increasingly hostile societal environment" could be.

The issues you propose should be related to management or leadership in the workplace. So, while "entire versus progressive sanctification" could make for an interesting discussion, it is not an issue related to management or leadership in the workplace, at least not for most people.

The issues you propose should have some literature available on them. Because these are recent issues, the availability of peer-reviewed journal (PRJ) articles may be limited, but there should be some high-quality literature available.  Please do a search - preferably using the library databases - to ensure that some good literature is available on each topic you propose.

The issues you propose should potentially be of interest to your colleagues; you will be voting on which of the submitted topics become the weekly topics for weeks 2-7.

Your assignment is to submit a list of six topics for consideration by the class.  Each topic should have a name and a brief (no more than 50 words) description.

An understanding of cells and cell behavior is a critically important

 September 01, 2022     No comments

  Case Study Analysis

component of disease diagnosis and treatment. But some diseases can be complex in nature, with a variety of factors and circumstances impacting their emergence and severity.

Effective disease analysis often requires an understanding that goes beyond isolated cell behavior. Genes, the environments in which cell processes operate, the impact of patient characteristics, and racial and ethnic variables all can have an important impact.

An understanding of the signals and symptoms of alterations in cellular processes is a critical step in the diagnosis and treatment of many diseases. For APRNs, this understanding can also help educate patients and guide them through their treatment plans.

Learning Objectives

Students will:

Evaluate cellular processes and alterations within cellular processes

Analyze alterations in the immune system that result in disease processes

Identify racial/ethnic variables that may impact physiological functioning

Evaluate the impact of patient characteristics on disorders and altered physiology

In this Assignment, you examine a case study and analyze the symptoms presented. You identify cell, gene, and/or process elements that may be factors in the diagnosis, and you explain the implications to patient health.

The Assignment (2-page case study analysis)

Develop a 1- to 2-page case study analysis in which you:

Explain why you think the patient presented the symptoms described.

Identify the genes that may be associated with the development of the disease.

Explain the process of immunosuppression and the effect it has on body systems.

You’ve been selected to join the crew of an upcoming mission

 September 01, 2022     No comments

You’ve been selected to join the crew of  an upcoming mission to the Moon.  Discuss any changes that will occur as  you make the voyage in terms of mass, acceleration due to gravity, and  weight. Feel free to embellish your account of values but you will need  to look up the accelerations due to gravity on Earth (surface) and the  Moon (surface) to support your account.

On this voyage there will be a change in  my weight, my weight will decrease because of the moon's gravity being  16.6% relative to earth's gravity. Even though my weight changes, my  mass will remain the same.

The acceleration of gravity on earth is 9.8m/s2

g=GM/r2

g=6.673×1011×6×1024/(6)2

g=9.8m/s2

The acceleration of gravity on the moon is 1.625m/s2

g=GM/r2

g=6.673×10^11×7.342×10^22/(1.74×106)2

g=1.625m/s^2

My weight on earth is 176lbs, my weight on the moon is 29.04lbs.

To find my weight I used the following equation

Weight = Mass x moons gravity

w=176×0.165

w=29.04lbs

Definitions:

Mass- a measure of how much matter an object contains.

Weight- a measure of the force of gravity on an object.

Formula for weight

w=mg

Acceleration due to Gravity- the acceleration for any object moving under the sole influence of gravity

Formula for acceleration due to gravity

g=GM/r^2

You are spending a weekend onboard the International Space Station

 September 01, 2022     No comments

You  are spending a weekend onboard the International Space Station and  you’ve been asked to produce a video of a weightlessness demonstration.   However, are you truly weightless?  Prepare a response to this question  in terms of mass, acceleration to gravity, and weight.  Feel free to  embellish your account of values but you will need to look up the  accelerations due to gravity on Earth (surface) to support your account.

We are not ever truly weightless that sensation is the result of  falling. Weight is the force of gravity exerted on an object. Mass is  the measure of how much an object can resist velocity. Acceleration to  gravity is the value assigned to an object that is free-falling towards  earth. If you were to jump out of a plane and free fall that would  create the feeling of weightless. Riding rollercoasters can give the  feeling of weightlessness when it goes straight down that is part of the  thrill. When in an elevator and it goes it gives the feeling of  weightlessness even though the elevator still has the same weight as it  goes up.

Continue using your project scenario from the (ATTACHED ASSIGNMENT

 September 01, 2022     No comments

) and identify and write your performance objectives. As you consider the scenario and the goals and analysis completed in Unit II, you will:

1) briefly recap your scenario,

2) write at least three terminal objectives,

3) write at least two enabling objectives for each terminal objective,

4) and reflect on the process you chose to write these objectives and why you chose this process with a minimum of 200 words.

Which of the processes or models from this unit did you utilize?

How does the process or model you have chosen best work for you in this situation?

This portion of your project should include a minimum of one outside resource (this can be your textbook).

When writing your terminal and enabling objectives, you may use bullet points of different levels for each type of objective, a table, or even a graphic image (you might use the SmartArt feature in Microsoft Word, for instance) to illustrate the relationships between your objectives.

You are free to choose whichever format works best for your scenario and objectives. Adhere to APA Style when creating your in-text citations and references for all outside sources that are used. Your formatting, however, does not need to be in APA Style for this unit’s assignment.

What are the applications of superconductivity?

 September 01, 2022     No comments

Superconductivity was discovered early in the 20th century. It allows current to flow in certain materials without electrical resistance when the material's temperature is lowered to extreme temperatures.

This week, you will examine applications of electricity and related concepts. Electricity is fundamental to our increasingly technology-based society.  The technology based on these concepts can be used for applications as diverse as heating food to transportation to communication at long distances.

Depending on the topic you are assigned, you will research applications related to electric circuits, magnetism, and electromagnetic radiation.

Before you begin, be sure to review the following resource:

You will do some research to determine how these devices

 September 01, 2022     No comments

You will do some research to determine how these devices are different but still use similar optical concepts to do different tasks. Microscopes use light and radiation to examine very small objects. Some devices are known an Electron Microscopes can be used to see extremely small objects. What are some applications of different types of microscopes? What are the different technologies they use?

Your eyes and cameras work on the same principle.  The lens in your eye focuses an image of what you are looking at, on your retina. In a camera, the image is projected on film or an imaging device from which a picture is made.  An X-Ray machine is also a camera even though it does not use lenses, it still uses optical concepts to form images.

A small conventional telescope also uses a lens to focus images of objects that are some distance away. The image is not projected onto your eye or a light-sensitive surface but is projected as a virtual object to be magnified by another lens or eyepiece to produce the image you see when you look through the telescope.

A microscope forms an image close to the object. Because the image is further from the lens than the object, it is magnified. The microscope eyepiece forms an enlarged image of the already magnified image with which you can view very small objects.

Before you begin, be sure to review the following resources:

The purpose of this assignment is to demonstrate knowledge

 September 01, 2022     No comments

  Instructions

The purpose of this assignment is to demonstrate knowledge of how the federal system of government works. Examine what the different branches and layers of government do to address a policy using a current issue to illustrate it. It is NOT to give your personal opinions on the issue.

Complete a research esay on how the federal government creates national security policy.

National security is always an issue in the United States. Here are the aspects and questions to address for this esay:

Identify a current policy problem for American national security, and then state a preferred policy solution to it and why it's preferred (This is your thesis statement).

Briefly explain two competing solutions to this problem while addressing the responsibilities of each level of government (federal, state, and local) and the three branches of the federal government (executive, legislative, and judicial).

Build the argument for why your chosen solution is preferable, what critics say about the solution, and finally why the critics are wrong.

REQUIREMENTS:

750 word target length (about three pages), not including references listed at the end or footnotes if used.

Inclusion of facts from a recent news article about the topic/solution.

Correct spelling, grammar, and formatting, whether it's APA, MLA, or Chicago/Turabian.

Writing tips:

1) Write concisely! More is not necessarily better if the required points from the rubric are missed.

2) Esays should be written in the third person perspective. (Avoid using "I, me, my, mine, we, us, our, you, your").

Select an article on a controversial public policy issue

 September 01, 2022     No comments

Select an article on a controversial public policy issue from a major publication such as the New York Times, the Washington Post, or another periodical or newspaper.  (avoid, for example, politically-motivated sources, cable news, your uncle's Facebook feedback) Ask these questions of the author of the article, being careful to provide “in text” evidence to support your analysis:

Does the author place the issue in a broad context? How?

Does the author suffer from tunnel vision?

Does the author discount or ignore other perspectives on the issue?

Does the author propose a creative solution to the issue?

Does the author address the issue comprehensively?

How might an interdisciplinary approach improve the author’s treatment of the issue?

What Is the Best Type of Marketing Research?

 September 01, 2022     No comments

What Is the Best Type of Marketing Research?

Many market researchers have their favorite research approaches or techniques, though different researchers often have different preferences. Some researchers maintain that the only way to really learn about consumers or brands is through in-depth, qualitative research. Others contend that the only legitimate and defensible form of marketing research uses quantitative measures.

Take a position: The best marketing research is quantitative in nature versus the best marketing research is qualitative in nature.

Submission Instructions:

Your initial post should be at least 200 words, formatted and cited accurately in current APA style with support from at least 2 academic sources. Your initial post is worth 8 points.

You should respond to at least two of your peers by extending, refuting/correcting, or adding additional nuance to their posts. Your reply posts are worth 2 points (1 point per response.)

This week, you will focus on one of the models you studied during this course

 September 01, 2022     No comments

This week, you will focus on one of the models you studied during this course. Your task in your Signature Assignment is to choose one of the classic MFT models that you learned about in this course and demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the model, including how the model approaches treatment planning. To do this, you are expected to describe how the model is based in systems theory, identify the theorist(s) who created the model, the role of the therapist, key assumptions, interventions, goals, course (length) of treatment, and limitations. Here is a general layout of what should be covered in this

I. Introduce the  (overview of what you will address in the , which is to describe your chosen model).

II. Describe your chosen therapy model.

Be sure to thoroughly articulate the primary theorist(s) of your selected Classic Model, including a specific illustration of why this model can be considered among approaches based on systems-based theories.

Describe the role of the therapist, key assumptions, interventions, goals, and course (length) of treatment using information from multiple sources and in-text citations. This is one of the most important sections of your , so focus your energy here. This section may include some information from the articles you located in Week 10.

Offer a critique of your chosen model. Discuss any possible limitations from this model, how cultural competency and diversity is addressed in the model, and any shortcomings of the model based on the research articles you located in Week 10.

III. Develop a treatment plan to treat the family.

Create a brief case example. You can base your family system on a movie that you have seen, a family you know, your own family, or your imagination. Describe the family system, including important information about their context (this will include aspects of their culture, belief systems, etc.) and presenting problem(s). This section will be written up in a paragraph (around 400 words).

Present a brief general treatment plan that uses goals, tasks, and interventions that are theoretically consistent with the model you chose. Review the treatment plan materials from earlier in the course and format the treatment plan as you would during therapy (with appropriate labels/numbers for goals, etc.) rather than just writing in paragraph format.

IV. Conclusion- Summarize the main points of your.

To complete this assignment successfully, you are required to demonstrate your knowledge of the selected model and treatment planning.

Length:  7-9 pages, not including title and references pages

Discussion: Definitions of Culture

A veritable plethora of scholarship has been devoted to attempting to define culture.  The concept is complex, yet most individuals have some idea about what the term means and includes. The idea of culture is so central to so much that makes us human, that it is well worth our time to explore and unpack its meaning in some depth. We may find that our ideas about culture share much in common with others' ideas about culture, but we may also find some nuances or emphases in some definitions that are less apparent in other definitions.

or this Discussion, you will closely examine various definitions of culture and the importance it may have to the psychology community.

To prepare for this Discussion:

Review the Learning Resources for this week and consider various definitions of culture.

Based on your review of the Learning Resources, post your responses to the following questions.

What are some definitions of culture that researchers have utilized?

What is a definition of culture that resonates with you and why?

Why should psychologists be interested in understanding culture?

ines of code in JavaScript. It will be done making something artistic

 September 01, 2022     No comments

ines of code in JavaScript. It will be done making something artistic - not always the end use case of code, but coding can be a way to express yourself! This assignment will have you writing commands, or lines of code that do something, and variables, which are lines of code that help you create and store data. As a first assignment, this is deceptively easy. Future assignments will require more effort and time.

It is expected that you do this work without referencing material beyond those employed in the class. (i.e., not using stack overflow or other resources to find exact solutions to the problems posed).

In this assignment and each future assignment you will be asked to create an algorithm (or plan) for your code, which will be shown in your comments in the code itself. You may also wind up doing some of your thinking on paper before turning it into a plan you can create code for.

Additionally, you will be required to write a brief reflection on your experience.

Submit a word document that includes :

1-your code

2- A reflection on the process you employed to get to this outcome (how did you plan your code, what resources did you use, where did you struggle, what were your takeaways / insights?)

3-The planning material you used for your program (pseudo code, algorithm development, drawings/sketches/flowcharts)

Assignment 3: Forecasting Due Week 9, Sunday (18% of final grade)

 September 01, 2022     No comments

Assignment 3: Forecasting Due Week 9, Sunday (18% of final grade) In the first two assignments, you looked at: (1) how NVIDIA (NASDAQ: NVDA) and Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) are positioned to take advantage of opportunities and manage risks, and (2) how well each is currently managing their performance. As part of this analysis, you identified potential areas for improvement and considered whether a merger or acquisition could strengthen their financial performance. Based on your insights and recommendations, Buffett is now asking for an assessment of what the future holds for these businesses. In order to deliver this, you must be able to accurately forecast cash flows (the money that comes in and the money that goes out). Like any predictions about the future, these forecasts require the collection and analysis of reliable data, including leading indicators in the broader economy as well as the market forces that impact competitive dynamics. This analysis will enable you to make smarter decisions about how to plan for the future in order to maximize returns, minimize risks, and beat the competition. Instructions For this assignment, you will continue to use the published data from the most recent annual reports you have been studying, as well as analyst reports and other resources available on the Internet. A. Complete the Assignment 3 Worksheet to assemble and assess your forecasts of working capital. The guidance for this is found on pages 137-169 of The CFO Guidebook. B. Summarize your Analysis and Recommendations by addressing the following questions: i. Which metrics/trends are most critical for forecasting future performance and for budgeting? To answer this, you must include an analysis of both past trend performance AND the applicability and reliability of key forecast indicators. In your response, consider: a. Which company has the stronger income statement? Explain. b. Which company has the stronger cash flows? Explain. c. Which company has the stronger operating performance? Explain. ii. Why are the metrics/trends in the data sets above so critical? How reliable are they as predictors of future performance? iii. Based on the data you have analyzed, which metrics would you focus on to improve the performance of the weaker company against the stronger one? Why? a. How would you do this? Your Practice Summary – due to my Hostos email address on

 September 01, 2022     No comments

Your Practice Summary – due to my Hostos email address on - is on “What’s in a Name?” by Henry Louis Gates Jr. and is in your textbook. The reading is also available online and you can search for it by using the reading’s title. Be sure to consult in your Syllabus the Guidelines for Writing a Summary which I have also included in this Announcement. Note all the information on what should be in a summary and go over the sample summary with its explanation of a summary’s key points.

* Keep in mind that a summary is a brief, objective account of the main idea(s) of a reading stated in your own words.

* You are only re-telling what the author states.

* DO NOT INCLUDE any personal opinion or any interpretation of what you believe the author is saying.

Doing an initial draft of what is being summarizing and re-writing it as necessary after sufficient proofreading and revising should be done before turning in the final summary. Follow these guidelines in writing a satisfactory summary throughout this course:

1. The summary is one paragraph. Present the main idea of the reading. The summary should be coherent, concise and offer accurate, factual information from the reading. Avoid retelling the entire reading. The purpose of the summary is to REDUCE the original material to its main points. Do not include transitions such as “however,” “also,” “therefore,” “so” and “in the end.”

2. The TOPIC SENTENCE in the summary paragraph should have the following information:

* the author's first and last names

* the title of the reading

* and the main idea of the reading stated objectively.

For example, here is a topic sentence based on “What’s in a Name?” with the required information: In Henry Louis Gates Jr.’s (the author’s name) story, “What’s in a Name?” (title of reading) he talks about an incident in his childhood when someone used another name for Gates’ father (main idea of the reading). When using the author’s name again in the summary, use only the author's last name and not the first name.

3. Write in your own words and not the words of the author. This practice is paraphrasing which helps avoid the danger of plagiarism, using words or ideas of someone else as though they were your own. Avoid using any quotes from the reading. A quote can be a word, a phrase or a complete sentence. If you must use the author's exact words, use quotation marks and include the page number(s) to locate the quotations. Only ONE quote will be accepted.

4. The summary should be written as an OBJECTIVE summary. Write it as if you are re-telling briefly an article in a newspaper the main points of the reading. Do not include any opinion, reaction or personal interpretation in the summary.

* Use in the summary these reporting verbs such as “says, tells, describes, discusses, states” or phrases such as “According to the author, according to ______(author’s name),” and “the (author’s name) states/says/tells (using any of the above reporting verbs).”

* Always use the present verb tense for the first verb and past tense for remaining verbs such as in this example: Gates states (present tense) that he had (past tense) an incident in his childhood about his father being called by another name.

5. REVISE, EDIT AND PROOFREAD THE SUMMARY BEFORE TURNING IT IN. As a student writer, this step is vital in your writing process. Keep in mind these questions as you are evaluating and comparing your summary with the original reading:

* Have you conveyed the important points as briefly as possible?

* Have you rephrased without changing the author’s meaning?

Sample Summary on “What’s in a Name?” by Henry Louis Gates, Jr.

In the reading, “What’s in a Name?” by Henry Louis Gates, Jr., he talks about an incident in his childhood about his father being called by another name by a neighbor. Gates says he grew up in Piedmont, West Virginia. Gates says while he was walking with his father, a neighbor, Mr. Wilson, spoke to his father, calling him “George” (3). According to Gates, his father tells him that Mr. Wilson refers to all non-white people as George. Gates states that afterwards he could never look at Mr. Wilson directly again.

In writing an objective summary, note the following components in the sample summary above:

1. Format: The summary is the required one paragraph. A paragraph is about five to eight sentences in length. The first sentence is always indented five spaces in.

2. The topic sentence for this summary is:

In the reading, “What’s in a Name?” by Henry Louis Gates, Jr., he talks about an incident in his childhood about his father being called by another name by a neighbor.

The title of the reading is given with the author’s name. The main idea is the remaining sentence which has an objective reporting verb, it is an accurate factual statement from the reading and no opinion is expressed.

3. The objective reporting verbs used are the following:

Talks, says (in sentences 2 and 3), a phrase: According to Gates and states.

Every verb used in the summary must be an objective reporting verb.

4. The summary is written in the words of the writer and does not use the author’s wording. However, a quote is given as the third sentence. Note that the quote is one word and is formatted correctly with quotation marks and the page number following the quote in a parenthesis.

Gates says while he was walking with his father, a neighbor, Mr. Wilson, spoke to his father, calling him “George” (3).

The quote is the word – George – which is in quotation marks with the page number following the quote in a parenthesis.

5. All sentences are stated as accurate, factual sentences. Avoid presenting any interpretation/opinion so that the summary is objectively written.

title: Pressure from “Involution”: Understanding Parents’

 September 01, 2022     No comments

Expectation and its Relation with Mental Health Among Chinese International Students

(1) Define "involution" and relate it to English Context: Chinese original definitions and their equivalence in the English language context (e.g., limited resource environment leading competence)

(check article: https://www.britannica.com/topic/involution-anthropological-and-economic-theory. / https://www.newyorker.com/culture/cultural-comment/chinas-involuted-generation. /https://news.cgtn.com/news/2020-12-04/-Involution-The-anxieties-of-our-time-summed-up-in-one-word-VWNlDOVdjW/index.html

(2) Comparative analysis of the sources and causes of involution——— compare them with similar phenomena among US students(e.g., parents’ high expectations can be seen in both Chinese and American or high expectations from Asian American families)

(3) Involution: interaction of various factors, do these factors interact the same way among Chinese international students in the US and American international students who study in other countries? (this can also be used in the future directions section)

(4) How do"involution" and parents' expectation influence mental health? (e.g., parents' expectations on academic performance, pressure from your peer or society)

---------------------------------------------- (It's hard to write about it and it's an introduction for thinking)

Key Word: Involution, Parents' Expectation, Mental Health,

The idea of involution within Social Science originally comes from anthropologist Clifford Geertz (Form & Nico, 2020) who found a process of inward over-elaboration within agricultural development, such that putting more effort and work would not lead to further growth or expansion in production. Sociologists then adopted the term “involution” to describe the phenomenon that occurred during the post-Open Door China era where young generations were competing against each other much harder than before but had neither significant breakthroughs among their living standards nor growth in per capita output since the rice economy of the Yangzi Delta (Huang, 1990; Little, 2010). Essentially younger generations were trapped in a pattern of “involutionary growth” (Huang, 1990). The Chinese term for involution is Neijuan (“内卷”), which is composed by Nei (“inside”) and juan (“rolling”) at the same time (Liu, 2021). According to Liu (2021), anthropologist Xiang Biao describes Neijuan as a process that spirals inward, entangling its participants in an “endless loop of self-flagellation”. Involution as it is referred to in the context of sociology, is defined as the sense of being locked in a competition that one eventually realizes is pointless (Liu, 2021). Furthermore, Xiang Biao states that in the 1990s, heated competition began because people were afraid of being left behind (Zhou, 2020).

China’s economy has been actively involved in the global economy since the implementation of the Open-Door Policy in the 90’s (Zou, 1996). Many Chinese entrepreneurs started their businesses and gained money from various investments through the Open-Door Policy. The economy was growing rapidly, offering citizens at the time much room to climb the socioeconomic ladder. The generation that had the first bite of the cake did not need to compete excessively as all the big cities were filled with opportunities. However, this generation was involved in the formation of involution within domains of education, career, and income. In other words, the next generation is likely to just find crumbs on the table since the big pieces are gone. Another term that often shows up with the involution among Generation Z is “996”, which means a work culture that requires employees to work from 9am to 9pm, six days a week. This working culture is popular among many Chinese internet giants that encourages employees to work as long as they can every day. The competition in the real world now becomes much more intense than before, so Chinese parents start to prepare their children to get ready to this “fight and survive” type of involutionary competition and workaholic environment as early as enrolling after school programs since kindergarten.

A derivative of this pressure and involutionary competition is that parents are urging their children to study abroad. According to a 2018 report from the National Bureau of Statistics of China, as of 2017, over 608,400 Chinese students study abroad annually. The downstream effects of the One-Child Policy alongside a developing middle class resulting from economic growth (Li, 2010; Waters, 2006; Yeung, 2013) has resulted in a dynamic where Chinese parents channel their resources towards their single child. Sending their children abroad for university education provides them an opportunity for social mobility and success (Li, 2010; Tsong & Liu, 2009; Tu, 2016; Zhou, 1998). Studying abroad reflects the nature of competition from involution. These parents often have high expectations of their children who study abroad. The expectations in part are a result of the involutionary environment and the sacrifice and expense from international education. Some parents evaluate the studying abroad experience as an investment, so that they expect a high return on investment (ROI), such as pursuing high-income jobs afterward. The high expectation may put additional pressure on their children’s shoulders who study worldwide.

Most studies that examine the cause of international students’ stress mainly focus on acculturative stressors and challenges to college adjustment, such as language barriers, academic performance, and loneliness as they relate to student’s pressure and related-mental issues (Williams et al., 2018). However, parents’ high expectations may also be related to students’ pressure and mental health as well. For instance, the high expectations from parents may pressure students to perform well academically or increase stress about their career pathway. Chinese international students as a community not only compete with the domestic students in the United States for career opportunities, but also compete with the domestic students in China. Neijuan (Involution) provides a meaningless and negative competitive environment. The highly competitive environment may become a tremendous pressure and cause anxiety. Another serious issue is that international students are mostly unaware of how their parents’ expectations are correlated with their pressures and mental health status. It may influence them not to seek help from a peer or the university center.
