 From the racist images in The Little Rascals to Franklin in the Peanuts comic strip and television programs, by Charles Schulz, mass media is full of images that perpetuate stereotypes. As mass media has evolved and changed, and as new and original voices (like BET) have come into their own, there has been a radical shift in depictions of characters.


In this Discussion, you will select, contribute, and discuss images that portray African Americans in U.S. media over time.


To prepare for this Discussion:


Read the Communication Program Discussion Guidelines.

Review “Bias in Mainstream News” in this week’s Learning Resources.

Review “Dispelling Stereotypes Through #blackgirlmagic” in this week’s Learning Resources.

Read the “Revolutionary Power of Black Panther” in this week’s Learning Resources.

Review “Black Male Re-Imaged” in this week’s Learning Resources.

By Day 4

Post a discussion post that addresses the following questions:


Find a source that shows a misrepresentation of African Americans in mass media. Post it to the Discussion board.

How do you feel about the way African Americans have been represented? Did you find that the representation has shifted over time?

What can we do to help bring about forward progress in the film and television industry?

Refer to the Week 4 Discussion Rubric for specific grading elements and criteria. Your Instructor will use this grading rubric to assess your work.
