Proper nutrition is very important to living a healthy life. Many people that suffers from substance abuse may develop poor nutritional habits. Substance abuse has a huge impact on long term health and nutrition. Drugs and alcohol has a harsh effect on the human body. Some of the most common effects of abuse includes:
Suppressed appetite: The inability to eat or forgetting to eat while under the influence or in withdrawal.
Poor diets: People abusing drugs or alcohol will prioritize using their substance. In turn, they may neglect proper nutrition. If they do eat, their diets may be unhealthy and contain nutritional deficiencies.
Overeating: Some substances cause excessive appetites — leading to weight gain and associated health problems.
Gastrointestinal Disorders: Drugs and alcohol can create a wide range of GI tract problems, including irritable bowel syndrome, digestive tract inflammation, and leaky gut syndrome.
Immune System Malfunction: Your immune system requires key amino acids, vitamins, and minerals to function properly. Without them, you’re susceptible not only to infections but also to a range of other health issues.
Malnourishment: Over the long-term, poor diets can hinder the body’s inability to absorb essential nutrients.
Organ damage: Alcohol and drugs can damage the pancreas, intestines, stomach lining, and other areas essential for proper digestion and absorption of vitamins and minerals.
Hypoglycemia: Poor nutrition and substance abuse can cause low blood sugar.
Nutrition is one of the most important things in weight loss managtment.

Laqeasha, I agree that proper nutrition is necessary for a healthy life. I have personally seen the affects of drugs on the wellbeing and health of people I know. I have seen the suppressed appetite where the individuals did not have an appetite to eat. Then there were times when the individuals would binge on food. The individuals also lost a tremendous amount of weight which was a sign of being malnourished. I also saw the affects of what happened when the individuals decided to stop using drugs. Eating habits changed and the individuals were able to gain a healthy amount of weight.

Week Six Discussion – Sherryl Stewart-Smith
Substance abuse is the overindulgence of a substance like drugs and/or alcohol. There are different types of drugs and each affects the brain in different ways. Drugs may cause mental, emotional, and physical changes. Drugs such as methamphetamine can decrease one’s appetite, cause extreme weight loss, and severe dental problems (Reick & Lundin 165). Cocaine also decreases one’s appetite and may cause one to become malnourished (Reick & Lundin 168).
A person who is malnourished has a deficiency in food intake. That person lacks the necessary nutrients to maintain a healthy body. “A nutrient is a compound that provides a needed function in the body” (Reick & Lundin 197). The nutrient is necessary to help maintain a health weight. There is a lot entailed in weight management. Ensuring a balanced caloric intake, developing healthy eating patterns, and managing a healthy BMI are examples of ways to maintain a balance in nutritional health and weight management.
