The building blocks of reading as defined by the National Reading Panel, includes phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
Phonemic Awareness: instructing students to identify and manipulate around 44 phonemes using the English language
Phonics: teaches students to build relationships with sound and letter or both; teaches students to use the relationships to build words
Fluency: ability to read aloud or alone accurately, quickly, and expressively
Vocabulary: words that are absorbed or learned orally or through print
Comprehension: ability to understand, remember, and make sence of a text
Together, these five building blocks create successful reading instructions that will help to shape students' brains to learn how to read and understand the English language.
The biggest difference in the two text is that Tompkins' text provides fifteen standards in which they feel are things that teachers need to know and how they should support their students learning. In the "Put Reading First 2006" text, there are only five pillars of reading. The only identifiable similarity is one of the fifteen standards, talks about reading. it states that "teachers use their knowledge of the reading process, types of texts, and instructional procedures to develop strategic, lifelong readers" (Tompkins, n.d.). This statement alone resonates with the five building blocks of reading. I currently do not have any experiences related to reading instruction
