Chapter 3. Equal Employment Opportunity, Affirmative Action, and Workforce Diversity
Overview:
This chapter provides the evolution of Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) and its necessity in the workplace. With the establishment of EEO, the chapter comprehensively provides the federal laws presently in place to ensure that equal opportunity exists for all individuals in the workplace. As a consequence, affirmative action was created to ensure responsibility and oversight of EEO practices within organizations. Types of illegal employment discrimination and Uniform Guidelines for managing discriminatory matters are provided and explained. Diversity Management, its elements, and purpose are discussed as another positive HR role in creating and maintaining EEO guidelines, as well as enhancing an organization for competitive advantage.
Learning Objectives:
1. Explain the concept of equal employment opportunity (E E O) and identify the federal laws affecting E E O.
2. Discuss who is responsible for ensuring equal employment opportunity.
3. Define the types of illegal employment discrimination and discuss affirmative action.
4. Explain the Uniform Guidelines related to various types of illegal employment discrimination, including sexual harassment, national origin, religion, and caregiver (family responsibility) discrimination.
5. Describe the concept of diversity and diversity management.
6. Explain the various elements of a diverse workforce.
Reflect on the assigned readings for the week. Identify what you thought was the most important concept(s), method(s), term(s), and/or any other thing that you felt was worthy of your understanding.
Also, provide a graduate-level response to each of the following questions:
1. Examine the equal opportunity laws of another country, not the United States. Are the laws in other countries as much a concern for HRM specialists as they are in the United States? (hint: You are needing to use an outside source for this, so there should be in-text citations and references.)
2. Affirmative action has become a political, economic, and emotional issue. What are some of the reasonable arguments in favor of and opposed to affirmative action.
[Your initial post should be based upon the assigned reading for the week, so the textbook should be a source listed in your reference section and cited within the body of the text. Other sources are not required but feel free to use them if they aid in your discussion].
[Your initial post should be at least 450+ words and in APA format (including Times New Roman with font size 12 and double spaced). Post the actual body of your paper in the discussion thread then attach a Word version of the paper for APA review]
