THE ASSIGNMENT: (total value: 15% final grade) The United States Constitution contains the idealistic goals of our founding fathers. The Bill of Rights contains important protections. Read the First, Fourth and Fifth Amendments. Choose either the First, Fourth or Fifth Amendment (you may choose to focus your
paper on a part of one of the Amendments) and respond to the following: 1.Which personal freedom(s) provide the subject of the Amendment?
2.Why did the drafters of the Amendment feel that it was important to focus on the
subject of the Amendment?
3.Locate the full opinion of a legal case that has been decided by the United States
Supreme Court that deals with the Amendment that you have chosen. Provide the title
and citation of the case. Brief the case (see instructions in text). Did the Justices
disagree? If so, why? In your opinion, did the Court decide the case correctly? Why
or why not?
4.Has the Amendment maintained its relevance in our society today? Discuss an
example of a topical issue currently facing American society that specifically reflects
the freedom? in question. Give your opinion with respect to the merits of the issue.
What would be a proper resolution of the issue? Attach copies of articles, etc. that
you have found that are relevant to the topical issue you have chosen to discuss.
Your report must be typed and cannot be more than four (4) pages long exclusive of any attachments.
