Phase 1 Assignment

 March 31, 2016     No comments

Phase 1 Assignment

As the network engineer, you have been asked to design the new network switching infrastructure that fully supports both the existing data traffic and the additional camera traffic according to the following requirements.

Design Requirements

Your network design should address each of the following requirements:

1.       Must comply with the Cisco hierarchical design model;

2.       Must provide physical, as well as logical, redundancy;

3.       Must integrate 1Gb or higher uplinks;

4.       Must segment camera IP traffic from the existing network for security reasons;

5.       Must support a minimum of 150 cameras and provide connectivity for 120 existing users, printers and servers that will be segmented into 4 departments/workgroups.  Plan for 20% future expansion;

6.       Must utilize PoE for cameras to avoid the use of power bricks or power injectors;

7.       Must provide sufficient bandwidth for full HD support and support existing data usage;

8.       Must minimize rack space.

Deliverables

You are required to prepare a detailed network report with network topology diagram for your manager at the next scheduled meeting.

Your report should:

1.       Thoroughly describe how your network design supports each of the requirements above to enable DeVry to take full advantage of the Cisco 4300 IP cameras.

2.       Describe how your switch selections satisfy the bandwidth requirements.

3.       A rudimentary topology diagram showing the distribution of users and cameras at the access layer.  You don’t need to place an icon for every device in your diagram.  Merely indicate the number of devices attached to each switch.  As you progress through the course and become more familiar with the detailed operation of switching devices you may need to make modifications to your design.  Do not be overly concerned with being absolutely precise at this point.

4.       Indicate your choice of distribution layer and core layer devices.  Do the best you can in justifying your device selections.  Again, you made need to tweak you choices in the coming weeks.

IMPORTANT: A report template is provided beginning on the next page and you must use it to submit your assignment.  Before submitting your assignment, delete the first three pages of this document containing the instructions.

Your submitted assignment should begin with the Title Page and only contain your report.

Research Options and Tips:

Most of the requirements and device information necessary to begin this project are contained in the first chapter of your textbook.  While chapter 1 will give you a brief introduction to VLANS, for more information about the implementation of logical segmentation and redundancy, refer to chapter 3.

You will be distributing the cameras across several switches and VLANs, so your main concern is to make sure that you select switches that meet the bandwidth and uplink requirements.  To make sure that you have enough bandwidth to support existing data traffic as well as the cameras, your switches should support at least twice the required bandwidth needed to support the cameras.  In order to select the proper switches key characteristics on which you should focus are:

•         Port Density

•         Forwarding Rates

•         Uplink Rates

•         Ability to Support PoE (at the access layer) and Link Aggregation (all layers)

When you see the term “segmented” you need to think VLANs and their corresponding IP address memberships.  Be sure that you remember to use routers (or better yet, layer 3 switches) to interconnect the VLANs.

The implementation of physical redundancy will be described and an overview provided in chapter 1.  However, the underlying control structure and loop prevention system STP will not be discussed in detail until chapter 5.  At this point in your design you only need to realize that it is important to the design.  Details of its implementation and configuration will be added to your design later in the process.

Use the links below, especially the link to datasheets for the cameras to discover the bandwidth requirements.

Your report should include a list of equipment that you have determined will support the network requirements as well as a logical diagram showing how the devices are interconnected.  Your diagrams can be created with Microsoft’s Visio design package or a similar product.

The following websites are available to assist in your research and design for this project. The first link below is an excellent article that discusses the design and implementation of a campus wide network in explicit detail. I highly recommend it!

The second link is the data sheet for the required cameras.  It will provide you with all of the information that you will need to integrate the cameras into your network.

The third link will provide information pertaining to bandwidth usage by the cameras.
