LOG301: Transportation case study

Transportation

Global Logistics

Assigment: For this case please read the article below concerning inbound logistics and then answer the following questions.

What are the problems companies face when they expand their supply chain worldwide? What are your suggestions?

Assignment Expectations

You should identify at least four problems/issues. You should use at least one additional resource. Make you claims and back them up with information from the reading and your other references. Add some of your own ideas. Be sure to indicate that these are your own. Use the same format as your module one paper. The paper should be 3-4 pages.

Global Logistics Solutions: A Guide to the Problems Shippers Face, Andrea MacDonald. World Trade. Troy: May 2007. Vol.20, Iss. 5; pgs. 36 - 40. http://search.proquest.com.ezproxy.trident.edu:2048/docview/228234244?pq-origsite=summon

Abstract:
As companies expand their supply chains worldwide, logistics complications grow and solutions become more problematic. In order to provide reliable, quality services, global logistics providers must be extremely flexible. Shippers need to ask their logistics providers what level of visibility their systems can provide. Supply chains are longer these days than ever before, and that makes communication with the consignee critical. Information needs to be online and accessible to all supply chain partners. The integrated IT solutions provide global visibility of shipments, orders, and inventory moving through the customers' supply chains. To minimize the risk of delays at ocean ports, there are a number of long-term and short-term strategies that shippers can implement to maintain or improve product flow. The most overlooked strategy is also the easiest -- the assurance of accurate and complete documentation. Another strategy to consider is the pre-clearance of cargo.

This is a Signature Assignment for LOG301 Case Module 5

There are three specific learning outcomes:

1.    Distinguish between an effective transportation design and an ineffective one.

2.    Describe the various modes of transportation and their use in supply chains

3.    Explain the importance of transportation systems to SCM.

The grading rubric below has been developed to measure student success in meeting the expectations related to applying your knowledge to transportation designs and their uses.
