The essay should be typed double-spaced in 12 point font with 1-inch margins, with final length of 2-3 pages. Follow a simple, standard essay format with 5 total paragraphs: an initial introductory paragraph, three supporting paragraphs, and a concluding paragraph. The final essay will be submitted online via Canvas. Good writing form is expected, so please visit the IUPUI Writing Center for assistance if needed.
In the opening paragraph, identify the chapter you chose to read, describe a main character in the story and their social position(s).
Choose at least three illustrative quotes from the chapter one for each supporting paragraph that demonstrate a concept related to the course (e.g. discrimination, axes of inequality, acculturation, gradient, social support, etc.), and describe the interplay of this concept in this persons story. How does this concept you identified play a role in the persons life opportunities and/or wellbeing? Please bold the name of the concept in each of the paragraphs. Remember to note the page number for each direct quotation within parentheses following the quotation.
In the closing paragraph, describe at least one pathway by which a social determinant in the story did (or might in the future) affect health/wellbeing of the person. Underline that description so that I can clearly identify it. Summarize your reflection on the Chapter, addressing whether or not this reading caused you to think differently about how health/wellbeing happens. If yes, describe how, and if no, describe how the story reinforced your previous understanding.
