“The Circle” raises a number of moral issues concerning the effects of social media and technology. It describes a world we may soon face, and to some degree already
do. In this assignment, you’ll need to think through critically some of these issues.
If you detest a character in the novel, this is your chance to explain why by entering into dialogue with him or her. If you think that Eggers misrepresents the
effects of Twitter, Facebook, Google, etc., you have an opportunity here to explain exactly how he does so.
Part of this project requires you to reflect on your own experience with social media and technology. Are you addicted to texting and social media? How would it feel
to live for a week, or even a day, without your cell phone, laptop, internet access, etc? You could perhaps try this, reflect on your experience, and write about it.
How has social media and technology affected your life, in both positive and negative ways? Is the way you represent yourself on Twitter and Facebook the ‘real’ you?
By relying more and more on technology, are we loosing in some sense what it means to be human? Or are we simply evolving as human society always has?
Another part of this project requires you to use a minimum of two outside sources to analyze the issue you’ve decided to explore.
You may also write it as piece of non-fiction, in the form of an argumentative essay.
