The practical situation is an Australian based organisation or a specific sector in Australia that you are familiar with. More specifically, you must identify and analyse the array of internal and external factors that have potentially influenced management’s strategic choices in HRM in the selected organisation or sector. This assignment involves the application of contingency (‘best-fit’) theory.
I choose Telstra is an organisation for this report
Requirements for the report
1. Build the theoretical foundation - must analyse and summarise contingency (best-fit) theory and stakeholder theory.
2. Identify and analyse relevant internal factors. - must identify and analyse internal factors (e.g. business strategy, desired organisational culture, workforce characteristics) that have potentially influenced management’s strategic choices in HRM.
3. Identify and analyse key stakeholders.- must identify stakeholders that have potentially influenced management’s strategic choices in HRM and analyse each stakeholder’s influence and its intensity
4. Conduct a scan of the external environment- must identify and analyse external factors (e.g. labour market factors, legal factors) that have potentially influenced management’s strategic choices in HRM.
5. Identify and analyse the key factors and stakeholders that have potentially influenced management’s strategic choices in HRM.- must identify, analyse and report on the key internal and external factors and stakeholders that have potentially influenced management’s strategic choices in HRM in a selected Australian organisation or sector
the structure of the report
Introduction
Criteria include: Provides background information about the organisation/business sector. Describes methodology (e.g. Who was interviewed? What type of material was referred to?). States limitations of the report. Previews structure (i.e. an overview of what the reader should expect to read in the rest of the report.)
Theoretical foundation
Criteria include: Provides a succinct overview of literature on Contingency (‘Best-fit’) Theory and Stakeholder Theory. Material effectively integrated into the report. Material well-supported with references to the literature. Both theories are explained within a HRM context. (See Task Assignment 1 in Figure 1.)
Note: About 2/3 of the literature overview should focus on Contingency (Best-Fit) Theory and about 1/3 on Stakeholder Theory.
Analysis of factors
Criteria include: The analysis is divided into logical sections and sub-sections. Material progresses logically from one idea to another. Smooth transitions between paragraphs and sentences within paragraphs. Links SHRM theory and concepts to practical issues. Insightful analysis of factors and their influence on HRM practices. Well-supported with references to the literature. Analytical as opposed to descriptive. Number of factors addressed provides sufficient breadth and depth of discussion. (See Task Assignment 2-5 in Figure 1.)
Conclusions
Criteria include: Follows logically from the analysis. Clear-cut and specific.
