Popular music is all around us. We hear it in public places, we make decisions as to what to listen to in private, and it accompanies many of the visual texts that we consume. Why do we listen to certain
songs and why do we like or dislike certain artists? How do songs communicate the cultural feeling of a given time and place and how do we map our own experiences and memories onto musical selections?
The goals of this assignment are to reflect on a popular song of your choosing and to begin to learn how to write thoughtfully and critically about popular music. You will analyze the song by reflecting on your own subjectivities and by contextualizing the song within its larger cultural and/or historical context. In other words, you will be discussing the song’s significance in relation to your own ideas,
experiences, and values, and that of its wider cultural context. You are to formulate a written text that responds to the points below.
