Since its announcement that it would close all of its Canadian stores, business writers have been dissecting Target Canada and how it went so very wrong. Many people believe that this is a classic case of management errors - in marketing, supply management, customer service and corporate strategy. Now it's your chance to be the management consultant!
1. Read the two attached news articles. The first, from CBC News, is from July 2014 and provides a detailed analysis of Target and its challenges, from well before its declaration of bankruptcy. The second, from the Globe and Mail in January 2015, provides an analysis after Target's announcement that it is declaring bankruptcy in Canada. You may also do your own internet search for additional news stories.
2. From the two news stories, identify the management errors that Target made, both in its entry into Canada and during the two years it operated. Pay special attention to the following factors: marketing, sales, customer relations, supplier relations, supply management, store management, market entry strategies and corporate culture.
3. Document your findings in a 3-5 page report detailing the management errors you have identified. In your summary/final paragraph, identify 1 or 2 errors you think were the most important and discuss what you would have done differently.
