Select a poem not on our course syllabus for analysis

 February 03, 2016     No comments

Select a poem not on our course syllabus for analysis: the poem must be found in the course text. If you do not have a text, select one of the following poems (which can be found online): Sonnet 18 or 116 by Shakespeare, A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning by Donne, The Garden by Marvell, Lines Written a Few Miles Above Tintern Abbey by Wordsworth, Kubla Khan by Coleridge, Ozymandias by Shelley, or Ode to a Nightingale by Keats. If selecting your own poem, it must have been published before 1900 or after 1999.
Step Two: Analyze the Poem (8 marks)
Answer each of the following questions in paragraph form:
Explain the content of the poem: what is it about? What topics are discussed and what are the speakers attitude toward these topics? (2 marks)
Describe the poems structure: how is it organized into stanzas? Is there a rhyme scheme (if so, what is it)? Does it follow a set meter (if so, what is it)? What sound structures are present (alliteration, assonance, consonance, onomatopoeia, etc.)? (3 marks)
Identify the figurative language used in the poem: what are the central images in the poem? Does the author use symbolism, metaphors, similes, personification, etc.?
