This module will introduce you to basic methods of research in the social sciences, particularly as they apply to journalism, media and communication. Whether youre considering undertaking a dissertation or seeking a grounding in research methods the module will provide an overview of key social scientific research methods and the different ways in which research can be conducted. It will also introduce you to the University ethics strategy and its relationship to research. The module has also been organised in such a way that it provides the context for students to develop their ideas about research in general and, for those who wish to progress to take the Dissertation Module (JNL305) in semester 2, their dissertation.
Module Aims
This module will:
Provide an overview of the most commonly used research methods in social sciences
Consider how these methods are applied in the fields of journalism, media and communication
Introduce students to the different ways in which research can be conducted including the application of ethical principles
Allow students to explore different aspects of research design and presentation
Equip students to undertake a small scale research project of their own.
