The book review should include a discussion of the background of the book and the author:
when was the book written? How is the time in which the book was written important to the way in which the author approaches the subject? If you are reading a historical novel where the author lived later than the time in which the novel is set, then to what extent do you think the author was actually focusing on his own time rather than the time of his subject?
who is the author? How is his personal identity reflected in the pages of the book? Why do you think he wrote the book?
what is in the book? You need to provide a brief summary of the book's content (the reader of your review will have read the book, so a detailed account of the plot is not necessary), highlighting only those sections that you think are most important to your thesis. A book review that contains a summary and nothing else will not be well received.
