Purpose: The purpose of the Cultural Interview Project is to explore the lived cultural meaning of health and illness with a specific participant. In addition, the student will increase his/her skills in listening to another persons story and life experiences in a non-judgmental and respectful way. Through listening to the narratives shared, the learner will:
Identify the patterns of caring and curing that are culturally congruent and supportive of their unique cultural beliefs and values, using the Campinha-Bacote Model constructs of cultural knowledge and cultural skill.
Increase appreciation and knowledge of Transcultural Nursing as a substantive area of study and practice focused on cultural care values, beliefs, and practices of individuals, families, groups and communities.
Compare and contrast dominant cultural beliefs and values of society in which we live with the respective personal cultural belief systems.
Compare and contrast the participants lived experience with the experience as explored in literature or other media. (How does the experience discussed compare and/or contrast with the dominant cultures portrayal of health and illness in this culture?)
Articulate understanding and learning in a professionally written paper. At least ONE peer reviewed/research article must be used to support cultural information. ALL articles must be turned in with the paper.
