A recent report from Ernst & Young (2012) highlighted the some discussion points within the hospitality industry. It stated that in the initial months of 2012:
·         Debt financing is expected to remain scarce, requiring investors and existing operators to be resourceful.
·         International travel and tourism volumes, driven by the rapidly increasing economies of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) economies, are anticipated to increase.
·         Mega events in Europe and South America from 2012 through 2016 will impact the global hospitality sector.

Hospitality operators must strive to reflect and consider these factors in order to compete in today’s climate. This means that best practices, such as sustainability, brand refreshment and the ability to manage change will remain at the forefront of operators’ strategies throughout the coming years. As thoughts of globalization among all industry stakeholders and participants have become the standard, it is vitally important to be aware of the changing face of the operational landscape from a management perspective to inform future strategy. The contemporary issues that operators need to address include:

·         Innovation
·         Technology
·         Environmental issues
·         Security

You are required to look at the global hospitality sector and write a 3000 word report that focuses in and critically examines three of the contemporary issues listed above, and also take into consideration what the future holds according to Ernst & Young 2012.

Using PESTE as an analytical tool you will look at how the industry has had to adapt during these challenging times and give examples of what organisations have done to survive in this market. You will be required to highlight positive and negative impacts to the sector and discuss how the macro environment has driven change. It is vital that you underpin your report with relevant academic theory and models.

Throughout the module you will be compiling a portfolio of evidence which will contain relevant journal articles, trade press, newspapers articles etc and it is this which will help you to link the theory to practice within the assignment.

It is important that from the start of the module you embrace the dynamic nature of the industry and all the contemporary issues that impact upon it. In order to do this you must ensure that you are up to date with current thinking and writings on both an academic and practitioner level. It is also expected that you will be able to discuss the examples that you are using and set them within the relevant context.
