Interview a person who currently holds a career that you would like to hold within about three to five years after graduation

 April 30, 2021     No comments

Interview a person who currently holds a career that you would like to hold within about three to five years after graduation. (Maybe you’d like to be the CEO of Disney, but I’m talking about a career position that you could reasonably expect to hold within that time frame.) The interview should last around 45 minutes. The objectives of this assignment are:

1.            To give you insight into the position.

2.            To develop your interviewing and self-presentation skills.

3.            To gain experience writing an executive summary.

This is not an employment interview; so do not ask for a job. Present yourself as a student conducting research regarding future career possibilities. This should be a face-to-face OR online interview, preferably in your subject’s workplace. If the only person who has your dream job is in NY, go for something comparable to your dream job.

Please follow these steps for this assignment:

1.            Conduct your own research regarding a career and potential companies that interest you. Gather basic information such as a job description, salary, level and type of education required for the position, and specific information regarding the company of interest. Use this information to formulate interview questions. Write up the information you’ve gathered in an annotated bibliography to be turned in to me along with your executive summary. You should use a minimum of three sources, such as newspaper articles, industry blogs, and company web sites. Do note, however, that any information from a company website counts as one source, regardless of how many links within it you’ve clicked.

2.            Contact an individual in the position of your choice and ask if they could give you about 45 minutes of their time. Do not interview someone you already know (relatives, friends and their companies are not acceptable for this assignment; do not interview someone in a place you’ve already worked yourself). If your mother’s best friend owns her own public relations company and you’ve never had the chance to ask her about it, you’ll definitely want to talk with her sometime—just not for this assignment.

3.            Formulate your interview questions (check Google for ideas) and re-confirm your interview two days before by telephone or email.

4.            During the interview, behave professionally. Dress appropriately, in business attire (as appropriate for the industry) if in-person, if online, speak clearly, audibly and ensure that your camera is functioning properly. Introduce yourself, your purpose and your goals for the interview (“My goal for this interview is to learn what it’s like to work in such a position and what the requirements are to be hired in a job like yours”). Explain that you have a number of questions to ask and that you would like to take notes, if the interviewee does not object. Listen carefully, paraphrase responses, and ask for clarification when you do not understand. After finishing your questions, ask your interviewee if there is anything else they would like to tell you. Be conscious of the time you’ve used and do not go over, unless they indicate they wish to continue. Thank them for their time.

5.            Get the interviewee’s business card or e-contact information before you leave the interview so you can include it when you hand in your assignment. (If the person does not have a business card, ask for an appropriate substitute, such as a piece of company letterhead.)

6.            As soon as possible after the interview, write a thank-you note and mail or email it to your interviewee. Be sure this brief letter is grammatically correct and error free! In your letter, do not use the clichéd phrase, “Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule.”

7.            Write a two-page executive summary about your interview. This report is a professional document in style and content which includes summaries on the following topics:

a.  Description of the industry/product/service

b.  Description of the position

c.  Requirements for the position (education, experience, skills)

d.  General summary of what you learned, including your own thoughts and reactions

e.  Attach your annotated bibliography to the executive summary.

7. Be prepared to give a brief informative presentation regarding your interview. Your total “Interview Package” will consist of:

•  5 to 10 slides and should include extensive notes for each slide.

•  Executive Summary (in memo format, addressed to me, Darren Hurst).

•  Photocopy/Email copy of your thank-you note.

•  Photocopy/Ecopy of the business card of your interviewee (if they do not have a business card, please get a piece of letterhead or a brochure at the very least).

•  Annotated bibliography from your pre-interview research in proper reference format (APA style).

Federalism Research Paper or Presentation Assignment Instructions

 April 30, 2021     No comments

Research Paper: Federalism Research Paper or Presentation Assignment Instructions

Overview

Public budgeting takes place at the national, state, and local levels. As you have seen, many of the debates related to public budgets arise from fundamental presumptions about the role and limits of government. Likewise, many debates arise from presumptions about which level of government, federal, state, or local has been appropriately authorized by the people and is in the best position to act in each area. To the extent that budgets are ultimately the avenue through which governments act, these debates very quickly become public budgeting issues.

Instructions

In this assignment, you writing a research paper analyzing the concept of federalism as it applies to the politics and policy of public budgeting. Specifically, you will need to provide a nuanced analysis and explanation of

1) the role and/or impact of federalism in maintaining constitutionally limited federal government,

2) the potential impact of federalism on federal level public budgeting.

3) the impacts of federal agency spending on public budgeting; and

4) a Judeo-Christian analysis of the concepts of federalism in public budgeting.

Research Paper Instructions

For this assignment, you should prepare a 5-7 pages research paper in APA format (not including title page, reference page, and any appendices). You must also include a title and reference page, citations from appropriate professional, scholarly, or other appropriate sources to fully support your assertions and conclusions. Additionally, your research paper must contain citations from the course text books, assigned readings, and a minimum of 5 additional sources which does not include the course textbooks, assigned readings, and the Bible.

This is a graduate-level research assignment designed to test your ability to carefully research, effectively organize, and concisely communicate a nuanced understanding of the concepts and issues raised in the assignment. While the minimum page limit is short (as is often the case in public policy/public administration briefings), students are expected to craft efficient, highly substantive papers.

You are expected to comport with the highest writing, research, and ethical standards. Additionally, to do well on this assignment, you must conduct high-quality research and offer rich, well-supported analysis; mere opinion or conjecture will not suffice.

There must be no careless or simple grammatical errors such as misspellings, incomplete sentences, comma splices, instances of faulty noun/verb agreement, etc. Such errors will result in significant point deductions.

Plagiarism in any form is strictly prohibited and may result in failure of the assignment, failure of the course, and/or removal from the program. It is your responsibility to ensure that you fully understand what constitutes the various forms of plagiarism and that you avoid all forms of plagiarism.

Upon successful completion of this module, you will be able to:

Analyze implications of federalism on public budgeting.

Evaluate methods of applying federalism to issues of public budgeting.

Evaluate implications of federal regulatory mechanisms on public budgeting.

Public budgeting takes place at the national, state, and local levels. Many of the debates related to public budgets arise from fundamental presumptions about the role and limits of government.  In this module, you will explore federalism and the avenue through which governments act on budgeting issues.

Remember that an organization is a company or business – such as a hospital, clinic, or insurance company – and an agency is a part of the government at the federal, state, or local level, such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Department of Labor (DOL), or a state health department.

Select 1 of the organizations listed below. Research the organization’s compliance information. Review the Organizational Research Memo Template to ensure you can obtain all information for the organization you have selected.

American Red Cross

American Heart Association

United Healthcare

Johnson & Johnson

Stryker Corp.

Verizon Healthcare

GE Healthcare

A hospital

A clinic

An insurance company

A nonprofit health care organization

An organization of your choice – the organization should not be a federal, state, or local agency, and must include information that is publicly available.

Write a 700- to 1,050-word memo to the corporate compliance officer. Use the Organizational Research Memo Template to complete the assignment.

This assignment involves telling the story of you and your family from a sociological perspective

 April 30, 2021     No comments

This assignment involves telling the story of you and your family from a sociological perspective through the medium of film. You will use some sort of digital media construction (e.g., Microsoft Movie Maker, iMovie, etc.) to create a digital movie of no more than six (6) minutes in length to introduce you, your family, and how you see them both being tied to social factors to the class. You will share your digital story with the rest of the class. Pictures, movie or TV clips, songs, quotes, or anything else you can think can get your point across can be used.

For this assignment, you MUST – and video/scripts that don’t will not be given credit – answer the following questions:

Why is it important for us to view your family using the SOCIOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE?

Who are the MEMBERS of your family that are married, divorced, remarried, adopted, etc.?

What STATUSES and ROLES do you occupy in your family?

Who are the members of your FAMILY of ORIENTATION (and procreation, if this

applies to you)?

How did you get to be who you are today (e.g. SOCIALIZATION) because of the family

you were born to?

What SOCIAL FACTORS (e.g., race, gender, and social class) influenced who YOU

have become?

What SOCIAL STRUCTURES (e.g., government, healthcare, education, economy, etc.)

influence your family?

What impact does your SOCIAL ENVIRONMENT (e.g., your neighborhood, city,

community, etc.) have on your family?

Which SOCIOLOGICAL THEORY (e.g., functionalism, conflict theory, symbolic

interactionism) would best explain the past, present, and future of your family in society?

You must address all of the above questions in your movie or you will lose points. Your paper/script must be organized. Your final script draft must have at least FIVE in-text citations (three can be from the textbook). You will create a video story of your family with particular emphasis on social factors (family, group interactions, socialization, media, social structures like religion and education, socioeconomic status, gender, and other factors we have covered in class) Note: this is an analysis of your family using a sociological lens, NOT a biography of your family. This can and should be as creative as you like. You will lose points for lack of creativity. This assignment should be a reflection of a semester’s worth of work. If your assignment looks like it was started the week (or night or morning) before it is due, it will show and your grade will reflect this.

I will be looking for:

Purpose – Make it clear that you know why you are doing this.

Script/V oice

Script – Is the script well written? Make sure your script flows well.

Audio – Is voice quality clear? Is music used to enhance your story? Does the

music enhance? Don’t let music drown out your speaking!

This assignment has been adapted from “Family Video Project” by Dr. Krista Cline and Dr. Benjamin Drury as found on ASA TRAILS.

Content – Do you include detailed discussion of how SOCIAL FACTORS influence the past, present, and future of your family? Remember that this is a sociology course. Everything you talk about should come back to the social factors that determine who you have become. It’s great when students integrate a quote from the book or lecture.Integrate sociology terms. An “A” story will also integrate theory – and do so correctly! THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT POINTS YOU WILL BE GRADED ON!

Images – Images are used to illuminate important ideas. They are appropriate for the message you are trying to get across. Images of you, public images, pictures you have taken, video clips, movie clips... be creative!

Proofreading – Grammar/spelling issues will take points off of your grade. Be sure you look at this before you show it to us.

The time limit is six minutes. If you go over the six minute limit, you will receive a penalty.

Be sure your file is in MP4 format and uploaded to either YouTube or Vimeo. Videos that are submitted that do not meet the formatting requirements are severely penalized.

Do not just submit the file directly to Blackboard. You need to submit the link

from YouTube or Vimeo to Blackboard.

You should think about what you’ve learned over the course of the semester and integrate

it into the project, but your personality should also come through! Be creative, have fun,

and show us what you know! Have fun with this assignment!

You must submit a draft of your script on April 9 or you will receive a zero on your quiz that week.

On the day of the presentations, you must submit a final draft of your script, or you will be unable to show your film and receive a zero on this assignment. Your script should be 4-5 pages double-spaced and include a title and bibliography. Be sure to cite ALL sources in-text and by completing your bibliography.

In order to cite in-text with the script, you will need to say something like “According to Cohen...” or “The Society for Family Stability Foundation says...” – if you don’t say it verbally, I cannot tell you have citations.

Reviewing the system development life cycle is a model that uses

 April 30, 2021     No comments

Reviewing the system development life cycle is a model that uses stages to bring a new process or project from inception to completion. (Building informatics-savy health departments: The systems development life cycle, n.d.). The waterfall method is one of the oldest methods and is sequential process, meaning that the output from one phase opens the next phase.

In the first phase, it must be determined if the project will be feasible and supported. This phase includes the budget with a cost-benefit analysis, returns on investment should be mentioned along with a time frame for completion. This phase would also include the stakeholders involved.

The second phase is the analysis phase where the development team creates a detailed study of the business needs for the organization. A project manager should make sure the identified needs and resources for strategic operation.

The third phase is the design phase that be used to carefully analyze business processes and find ways to streamline existing processes to improve efficiency. During this phase, the low-level team members will look at how the workflow is done currently and how the new system may work. This phase will clarify the requirements and help the team to decide to use internal developers or an external vendor.

The implementation phase is the fourth phase and is where the programming language is determined based on application requirements (Mcgonigle, 2017, p. 179). Most of this phase is directed by the information technology team. “The goal of this phase is to create an application that can be tested by potential users” ("Building informatics-savvy health departments: The systems development life cycle," n.d).

The test phase is the fifth phase that allows users to identify defects or “bugs” before the rollout is completed.  In this phase there may be several mini phases that include beta-testing.  “During the beta testing users put the new system through its paces to make sure that it does what they need it to do to perform their jobs”(Mcgonigle, 2017, p.179).

The implementation phase includes super users and deployment support to help make the transition easier for staff. This phase includes training and the operational impact and ends with a “go-live” date. The last phase includes maintenance and operations. This is usually led by the IT staff and helps ensure the system performs as anticipated.

In my healthcare organization, we have a project improvement team . This team takes requests from any staff and analyzes the benefits of a new process or procedure. In the last 5 years we have switched from McKesson to EPIC as an electronic health record. We have partnered with several local hospitals and the “go-live” date is July. Staff from our facility will be “super users” and assist staff for one month.

A nurse could contribute to each phase by being involved in the planning and implementation phase. The more involved a nurse is the more the nurses will embrace new models of care. “There is evidence that nurse involvement in all stages of health IT development and implementation can improve the effective execution and use of health IT systems” (Rein,2011).

To fully understand the law with respect to business

 April 29, 2021     No comments

*Important Note: This is your 3rd case brief this semester, and you should be feeling more comfortable with the process. While you are free to consult outside sources to better help you understand the cases, you must use your own words when writing your brief.

Case Briefing

To fully understand the law with respect to business, you need to be able to read and understand court decisions. To make this task easier, you can use a method of case analysis that is called briefing. There is a fairly standard procedure that you can follow when you “brief” any court case. You must first read the case opinion carefully. When you feel you understand the case, you can prepare a brief of it.

Although the format of the brief may vary, typically it will present the essentials of the case under headings such as those listed below.

Citation. Give the full citation for the case, including the name of the case, the date it was decided, and the court that decided it.

Facts. Briefly indicate (a) the reasons for the lawsuit; (b) the identity and arguments of the plaintiff(s) and defendant(s), respectively; and (c) the lower court’s decision—if appropriate.

Issue. Concisely phrase, in the form of a question, the essential issue before the court. (If more than one issue is involved, you may have two—or even more—questions here.)

Decision. Indicate here—with a “yes” or “no,” if possible—the court’s answer to the question (or questions) in the Issue section above.

Reason. Summarize as briefly as possible, in your own words, the reasons given by the court for its decision (or decisions) and the case or statutory law relied on by the court in arriving at its decision.

Assume you are a nurse manager on a unit where a new nursing documentation system is to be implemented. You want to ensure that the system will be usable and acceptable for the nurses impacted. You realize a nurse leader must be on the implementation team.

To Prepare:

Consider the benefits and challenges associated with involving a nurse leader on an implementation team for health information technology.

The Assignment: (2-3 pages not including the title and reference page)

In preparation of filling this role, develop a 2- to 3-page role description for a graduate-level nurse to guide his/her participation on the implementation team. The role description should be based on the SDLC stages and tasks and should clearly define how this individual will participate in and impact each of the following steps:

Planning and requirements definition

Analysis

Design of the new system

Implementation
